When we decided to pack all of our stuff and sail around the world, friends and family thought we were a little crazy. But that's just it—we're adventurers at heart, always searching for new experiences. And there aren’t many greater adventures than exploring the open seas on a sailboat. If you're curious about why we made this big life change or what our plans are, keep reading…
A Need For Freedom
We were inspired to sail around the world for a number of reasons. First and foremost, we are freedom seekers and we have always had a love for traveling. We don’t like being tied down to one location. The world is too wide and beautiful to stay in one place forever and life is too short to wait for what might be the perfect moment.
If you really want to do something you’ll find a way. If you don’t you’ll find an excuse. - Jim Rohn
A Unique Experience
We had traveled Europe and the US with our camper for many years but we were ready for something new.
Sailing around the world appealed to us because it is an adventure that few people ever get to experience. It would allow us to see new places, meet new people and learn about their cultures. And it would be a great way to challenge ourselves and push our boundaries.
Quality Time As a Family
Sailing would also give us the opportunity to spend quality time together as a family without the distractions of everyday life. It offers a unique set of experiences and an education for our kids that can’t be found anywhere else. Whether it’s getting to know new cultures, exploring different landscapes, or simply having the opportunity to sail on the open seas, there’s always something new to discover. And while it may be challenging at times, raising kids on a boat is an education in itself. They learn how to adapt to change, how to problem solve, and how to be independent. Plus, they get to see the world from a whole new perspective.
All in all, we felt that sailing was a great way for us to experience another way of living and to explore more of what the world has to offer. And so far, we haven't been disappointed! This experience is something that we and our kids can always look back on with fond memories. We can’t think of anything better than that.
These are some of the excuses that didn’t stop us:
-
“I don’t know how to sail!”
-
“The kids have to go to school!”
-
“It’s too risky!”
-
“I don’t have time!”
-
“I’m not sure if it’s something for me!”
-
“What if something goes wrong!”
But who cares! We bought a boat, started sailing, and are having the time of our lives. So what if I didn't know how to sail? I just learned as we went. And the kids? They are loving (most of) it. They make friends along the way, learn new things, and have stories for a lifetime. Risky? Maybe. But worth it. We're so glad we took the plunge (literally) and are doing this trip. If you're thinking about doing something similar, go for it! You won't regret it.
